Resumo (PT): O artigo estabelece as coincidências existentes entre a narrativa do romance de José Saramago intitulado Todos os Nomes (1997) e as ações adotadas por Natalis de Wailly em 1841 a mando de Napoleão Bonaparte, então Imperador da França, no sentido de criar um arcabouço operativo para organizar o acervo dos Arquivos Nacionais desse país, o qual havia sido desmantelado para atender a governança de Bonaparte. O objetivo geral deste artigo consiste em analisar as peculiaridades do vocábulo ‘fundo’ usado nesse livro de Saramago e do termo técnico Fundo criado por Natalis de Wailly. Especificamente, pretende-se abordar o caráter multifuncional do vocábulo fundo coloquialmente usado em Todos os Nomes (1997) e a sua transformação em estratagema técnico e operativo por Natalis de Wailly em 1841; destacar as confusões conceituais entre Fundo, Fundo de Arquivo e Arquivo presentes na Arquivística custodial e mostrar as relações entre a postura do Senhor José (personagem fictício da trama de Saramago) e a postura de Natalis de Wailly (personagem real da França oitocentista) com relação à forma como ambos, cada um em seu contexto espacial/temporal, corporificam a máxima “Conheces o nome que te deram, não conheces o nome que tens”.

Abstract (EN): This paper establishes the coincidences between the narrative of José Saramago’s novel entitled Todos os Nomes (1997) and the actions of Natalis de Wailly in 1841 by order of Napoleon Bonaparte, France Imperator at that time, with the aim of creating an operative framework to organize the documents of the France National Archives which had been dismantled to attend Bonaparte’s governance. The broad objective of this paper is to analyze the peculiarities of the word ‘fonds’ used in Saramago’s book and of the technical term Fonds created by Natalis de Wailly. Specifically, it aims to approach the multifunctional character of the word ‘fonds’ colloquially used in Todos os Nomes (1997) and its transformation in technical and operative stratagem by Natalis de Wailly in 1841; highlight the conceptual confusions between Fonds, Archive Fonds and Archive present in custodial Archivistics and show the relations between the attitude of Mr. José (fictional character in Saramago’s plot) and the position of Natalis de Wailly (real character of France of the 19th century) in regard to the manner how both, each one in his spatial/temporal context, personify the maxim “You know the name you were given, you do not know the name that you have”.
