Abstract: Hannah Arendt’s philosophy is often associated with a phenomenology of the political but what is meant by that phrase is not always clear. My thesis is that her philosophical and theoretical work, informed as it was by her lived world experiences of exile and education, contributes to a ‘program’ of action that leads to creating the kinds of public spaces of appearance that enable intersubjective actors—we socio-political humans—to more fruitfully engage with each other. Those fruitful engagements played out in ‘public space,’ and thoughtfully informed by her philosophy of natality, can then lead to ever-new co-creations—or re-creations—of our public spaces that provide potential clearings for stimulating the intellectual and aesthetic potential of city dwellers to work together to create more sustainable—enjoyable, nourishing, supportive—cities and institutions.
