Objectives

Within a wider context of Portuguese history and culture, this subject aims at providing students with a broader view of the philosophical thought in Portugal from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

A. Introduction
1. Philosophical thought in Portugal during the 19th and 20th centuries: Ethics, Philosophy and Religion.

B. Philosophy in Portugal during the 19th century
1. Silvestre Pinheiro Ferreira: onto-gnoseology and political theory.
2. Pedro Amorim Viana: Philosophy and Theology.
3. Introduction to the philosophical thought of Antero de Quental.
5. Positivism of Teófilo Braga.
6. The idea of God in Sampaio Bruno.

C. Philosophy in the 20th century
1. Leonardo Coimbra and Creationism: Critical Philosophy of knowledge.
2. Teixeira de Pascoaes: the poet-philosopher of ‘saudade’.
3. Ethics at the basis of the philosophical thought of Raul Proença.
4. José Marinho: an ethical-metaphysical thought.
5. The existential philosophy of Vergílio Ferreira.
6. Agostinho da Silva: a Philosophy of action.

Note: the authors mentioned above will obviously be broached in terms of a general approach to their thought.
