Objectives

To understand the development of 19th and 20th-century architecture, students will study the theories, movements and figures responsible for the major accomplishments and their relation with the historical and social contexts.

2. Engineering and Architecture
2.1. New materials and techniques. Iron architecture.
2.2. The Universal Exhibitions.

3. From Art Nouveau to proto-rationalism.

4. Birth and dissemination of modern architecture.
4.1. The American vanguard: the School of Chicago.
4.2. Organic architecture
4.3. Expressionism, Cubism and Futurism in architecture.
4.4. Rationalism and Functionalism. De Stijl. Constructivism. Bauhaus. The International Style.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Several methods will be used (explanatory, dialogical, text and image analysis - slides, transparencies, etchings, videos, etc.) in compliance with the contents mentioned above and bearing in mind the most appropriate for the group of students at issue. Dialogue will at all times be valued, urging students to develop their analysis skills, creativity and critical spirit.
