Objectives
By the end of the semester students should be able to:
1. Define and identify concepts such as «mass society», «elite culture», «mass culture», «symbolic power»;
2. Identify and explain social and political processes of cultural production.
3. Relate the political and economic triumph of the bourgeoisie with a specific cultural and value model and identify its major elements;
4. Identify the historical context surrounding the triumph of nationalist and racist definitions of culture and national/cultural identity.
5. Historically explain the passage of a culture predominantly «typographical» into one predominantly audiovisual.
5. Identify the historical context surrounding the major intellectual confrontation movements during the 20th century.
Program
1. INTRODUCTION:
1.1 Test and propaedeutical reflection to assess the role of this subject as part of the History course, the students' expectations and the historical meaning of contemporaneity.
1.2 Concepts and perspectives for a social history of contemporary culture.
2. THE BOURGEOIS CULTURE:
2.1 Liberal Revolutions laicisation and bourgeois culture.
2.2 Legitimation of the bourgeois elite culture:
2.2.1 Bourgeois culture and sociability;
2.2.1.1 The mentality of the Romantic:
2.2.1.2 Education and school, the social role of the educated man;
2.2.1.3 Bourgeois values: respectability and transgression;
2.2.2. Science and scientism;
2.2.2.1 Perspective of the sciences in the 19th century and first half of the 20th century:
2.2.2.2 The national construction through state socializing institutions and social elites;
3. THE EMERGENCE OF MASS CULTURE:
3.1 Mass society and social massification.
3.2 Contemporary press;
3.3 From the Galaxy of Gutenberg to the Galaxy of McLuhan: the mass media - cinema, radio and television - and their social impact.
4. THE "TIME OF THE INTELLECTUALS" AND IDEOLOGICAL CONFRONTATION:
4.1 Revolution and antifascist vanguards;
4.2 Fascisms and manipulation of the masses.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Classes will consist of a variety of academic activities comprising in-depth explanation of sets of information, possibly included in copied texts which are made available to students beforehand, so as to encourage discussions in class; analysis of written or video documents, and occasionally of information gathered in field-trips; and bibliographical and/or documental research work carried out by students according to the terms established at the beginning of the semester.
