Objectives

a) To analyse basic features of course books (including advantages and disadvantages)
b) To analyse and discuss the selection, adaptation and rejection of published ELT course books
c) To analyse and discuss successful design features of supplementary materials
d) To produce supplementary materials with specific characteristics (level, age group, purpose, etc)

Learning outcomes and competences

Student teachers will devlop their 'critical eye' in realtion to published and self-made materials for ELT. They will become better eqipped to select, adapt, reject or supplement ELT materials.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Students should be currently enrolled on a master's degree in teaching at FLUP.

Program

a) Analysis of course books from the point of view of subject content (presentation/practice and selection/grading), cultural content (appropriacy/inclusivity), skills development and other associated factors.
b) Approaches to adapting published teaching materials for different teaching contexts 
b) Production of teaching materials for grammar practice and/or vocabulary development, skills work and cultural awareness
c) Overview of supporting materials, multimedia and C.A.L.L.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Procedures followed will highlight the need for student-teachers to actively participate in sessions and critically reflect on course books and materials development. Consideration will be given to recent changes made in national English language teaching programmes. A fully collaborative and critical attitude will be developed and demanded. Attendance at sessions will be rigorously controlled.

Eligibility for exams

All students are required to attend 75 % of classes, with exceptions according to FLUP regulations.
Official worker students are not required to attend lessons but must take all components of continual evaluation.

Calculation formula of final grade

Students must present a critique of a recent ELT coursebook (60%) and also a set of teaching materials for a specific lesson plan (40%).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status, namely those covered by the status of Association Manager, Student Athlete, Student Firefighter, Military Student, National Team Athlete, Top-level Sportsperson or Student Worker, will not be obliged to attend classes, but must complete all the continuous assessment components on the set dates. In the event that a student needs to be absent on a set date, an alternative date will be arranged.

Classification improvement

Students who wish to improve their final mark may only repeat ONE written test. Students must inform their teacher in writing (via email) which test they wish to repeat. Students must also be properly enrolled for ‘melhoria’ with the ‘Serviços Académicos’ so that their names are included in the marks list on Sigarra.

 

Observations

Worker students should stay in touch with the teacher and their colleagues so as to keep up to date with progress and evaluation dates etc.
