Objectives

The goal of this module is train students in subtitling from Spanish to Portuguese going through the different steps of the process: transcription, translation, synchronisation and subtitling, as well as subtitling for the Deaf, Audiodescription and localization.

Students make contact with the processes of analysis and management of translation projects, so that they are able to manage and deal with the intercultural character of the localization process and adapt a product for a different culture without forgetting the strategies of adjusting and allowing for legibility of the segments.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the seminar, students will be able to:
- Identify the unique character of audiovisual translation and multimedia documents.
- Understand audiovisual and multimedia translation strategies, their terminology and the multimedia translation professional environment.

Use specific computer assisted tools (CAT) for translation and accessibility of audiovisual and multimedia, and how to use internet and other research sources worked during the semester
- Use
linguistic and technological resources in Audiovisual translation
- Translate and mediate in specific intercultural contexts involving multimedia translation.
- Rephrase, restructure and shorten accurately multimedia documents with regard to translatio needs.
- Understand and implement quality control strategies, using appropriate tools and techniques in multimedia translation.
- Implement the instructions, style guides, or conventions relevant to a particular translation (multimedia).

8. Analise of an audiovisual translation product and its translation to an specific audience
9. Audio description: synchronization and adaptation of visual message
10. To adapt text to a different channel (verbal or subtitle)
11. To adapt text to the needs of a deaf or blind audience, complying with their specific needs
12. To analyse audiovisual and multimedia products from a semiotic perspective

Program

1. Introduction to multimedia translation: analysis of different aspects to be taken into account in multimedia translation, with special development of audiovisual translation. Different computer tools for translation and audiovisual and multimedia accessibility will be presented.

2. Dubbing, subtitling and audio description: pragmatic analysis through multimedia and audiovisual speech, students should work the criteria for evaluating the quality of translations, so as to enter the professional audiovisual traslation in the editing process
.


3. Subtitling for the deaf and audio description: Meet and work with subtitles available in the Portuguese market, dominated synchrony and speaking skills in audio description for the adaptation of the text to the spread and accessibility requirements format.

Eligibility for exams

Frequency of 75% of lessons, except in the cases considered by the law.
Classes will be theoretical-practices, with different examples of audiovisual translation that students should consider.

During the classes, students will work in the computer room to meet and train with proper tools of subtitling, such as Subtitle Workshop; so students, as the matter progresses, shall deliver different jobs subtitling, audio description and subtitling for deaf people which shall be evaluated, on the basis of the programme work done during the semester.
