Objectives

In this course students will complete the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in all competences. They will deepen their cultural competence and acquire the necessary skills and text competence for their further education and their future professional activity. At the end of the semester they are supposed to be able to:


  • communicate in German, adequately and selecting the appropriate style and register, in different professional and academic situations, both orally and in writing;
  • distinguish different types of text and reproduce them actively;
  • express themselves differently in terms of grammar, vocabulary and phraseology;
  • understand specialized texts and reproduce or summarize their contents;
  • express themselves with complex syntactic structures and differentiated vocabulary;
  • discuss complex current topics of German speaking countries;
  • acquire autonomy in consultation of materials in German and develop research and presentation techniques;
  • write and present academic papers;
  • use effectively dictionaries, grammars, corpora and correction programs;
  • acquire strategies to overcome difficulties independently.

Learning outcomes and competences

 

By the end of the semester, students should have reached, in German, the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

In order to successfully participate in this course unit, students should master the contents provided at level B2 as well as the contents taught in the course unit German C1.1 of the Master course they are studying.

 

Program

The program includes :


  • reading and analysis of scientific, journalistic and literary texts;
  • deepening of awareness of distinguishing characteristics of different text types: variation in structure, style, register, phraseology and use of verbal modes and tenses (focus on the use of the conjunctive for quotes; nominal style in scientific texts etc.);
  • free and interactive communication (presentation of papers, discussions, interviews);
  • textual coherence and cohesion (special focus on connectors and Pronominaladverbien);
  • written production: specific features of different text types (curriculum vitae, letter of application and motivation, essay, abstract, academic paper);
  • topics: actual culture of German-speaking countries, professional life and labour market and translation;
  • review and deepening of grammatical and idiomatic contents; collocation (corpora), glossaries;
  • contrastive studies (interference with the native language or other languages);
  • strategies for self-study;
  • work on projects, research and writing and presentation of papers.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Practical classes with various teaching strategies in which students are expected to work individually or in a group, to participate in projects, to use materials indicated by the teacher and to do research in the library and on the internet. Great emphasis is given on active participation by students.
The mode of assessment is the evaluation without final exam, which requires an active and continuous participation by the students: they present oral and written papers, write tests and present research results and a project work.

The evaluation of this course unit does not provide for a final exam. Therefore, student workers and other students legally exempted from regular attendance in class should contact the teacher at the beginning of the semester to combine an alternative assessment modality, otherwise they will be excluded from any evaluation.
