The objectives of the course are to lead the students to:
1. Develop the capacity of explicit reflection on language;
2. Become aware of the linguistic choices made in each moment of the written productions;
3. Analyze and reflect on the various levels of texts structure: morphological, lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic; paratextual;
4. Acquire techniques for written expression and communication in a wide variety of text types/genres;
5. Fulfill the stages of the writing process; search for information; planning; textualisation and revision.
6. Incorporate and automatize self-regulation procedures of the writing competence.
By the end of the semester the students should be able to:
1. Distinguish and apply the several stages of the writing process: information gathering; planning; textualisation and revision;
2. Recognize the different levels of text organization: morphological; lexical; syntactical; semantic; textual (cohesion and coherence); paratextual, pragmatic and sociolinguictic;
3. Recognize and apply appropriately the rules and conventions of the written texts in several text genres and discourse types;
4. Recognize and apply the appropriate sociolinguistic adaptations according to the function and addressee of the texts;
5. Situate the linguistic deviations in terms of Normative Grammar and Usage;
6. Use the normalization instruments available more competently (Grammars; Dictionaries; On-line resources)
8. Make an auto diagnosis to the writing and rewrite in function of the necessary improvements.
9. Incorporate and automatize self-regulation procedures of the written competence.
1. Written Communication - Grammatical aspects of the writing process
1.1 Levels of linguistic analysis /structuration: lexicon; syntax, semantics, others;
1.2 Problematic areas for linguistic normalization in Portuguese;
2. Written Communication - Textual aspects of the writing process;
2.1 Stages of the writing process: information gathering; planning; textualisation; revision;
2.2 Principles of textual structure: coherence, cohesion; others;
2.3 Textual sequences: narrative, descriptive, argumentative, expository/explanatory, injunctive/instructional, dialogal/conversational;
2.4 Compositional heterogeneity of texts;
3. Written Communication - Discursive aspects of the writing proces
3.1 Text; cotext; context
3.2 Linguistic competence and communicative competence;
3.3 Norm and Usage;
3.4 Linguistic varieties and language registers;
3.5 Types of discourse and genres of text
3.6 Modes of enunciation, modality and modalization in discourse.
The teaching / learning process is based on lectures and tutorials (39 TP)
In the sessions the theoretical description of contents is made, followed by the presentation and implementation of activities on concrete examples.
In the practical sessions the development of writing assignments related to the matters under consideration is proposed, with a view to their continued monitoring.
The materials used in class (eg, slides, papers, texts) are available in Sigarra platform.
The mode of evaluation of the course consists of assessment without final exam.
The final grade for the course corresponds to a weighted average of the marks obtained in the components of practical works and test, with weights of 50/50. The marks in each of the components has to reach the minimum mark of 10 (out of 20)
There is a compulsory 75% attendance.
