Teaching methods and learning activities
Classes will proceed by integrating teaching/learning methodologies through exploration, debate and discovery (1) by active methods (2).
1.Exploration, debate and discovery – to stimulate an active role on the students, every week the students are encouraged to read specific legislation/documentation, through which class debate is stimulated. Class debate is alternated with moments of presentation, stimulating vertical as well as horizontal dialogue. A field excursion will also take place, normally on a selected municipality, in order to promote discovery and comprehension of different issues in terms of spatial management.
2.Active methods – The presentation and discussion of one case study, national or international will be proposed as well as the development of a group assignment on a local scale, involving data collection and processing as well as writing a report and a written test will also take place.
The methodological option focused on exploration, debate and discovery contributes to a better learning of the different instruments and contact with legislation evolution . Ensuring availability of specific legislation/documentation every week from an early stage, encouraging its analysis and presentation favours learning and promotes class debate. For some presentations external specialists will be invited (Researchers or professionals). This methodological strategy also has the virtue of stimulating student’s ability to communicate and debate. Foreign students are encouraged to bring to class knowledge and experiences from their native countries (with different issues and legislations). Including a field excursion contributes to the fulfilment of all the defined objectives, by strengthening knowledge through interaction with local spatial management issues, improving spatial analysis skills and operation of the adequate instruments for those issues. This field excursion will be accompanied by local agents (Mayor, Councillor, city services, etc.).
A case study (National or international planning practice) and work group at the local scale are developed in pairs, mainly aiming for the development of teamwork skills.
The intention of both case studies is to provide the analysis of different situations, to communicate and debate ideas, improving interpretation, discussion and communication skills which allow further learning. The choice of either a portuguese or international case by each group allows for comparative and multi-tier analysis to be performed. Additionally, promoting contact with different realities helps develop conceptual and methodological learning which portray heterogeneous issues and decisions. The assignment presentation as pairs also develops oral communication and sharing skills.
Writing a report on the respective case study contributes to the development of written communication skills.
