Objectives

We seek to make the student familiar with the main aspects of modern and medieval Portuguese Numismatics, both regarding Monetary History and, mostly, concerning the identification and classification of coins.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student shall be able of classifying portuguese medieval and modern coins and understanding their chronological, cultural and economical meaning. He/she shall also know how to identify and to handle the main bibliography, as well as the catalogs for coin classification.

1. Introduction to numismatic studies. Technical elements. Numismatics nomenclature. Weight systems. Evolution of coin minting techniques;

2. Historical evolution of the coin in the Portuguese space;

2.1. Background: Visigothic and Suebi coinages;

2.2. The Muslim coin;

2.3. The Portuguese coin in the Middle Age;

3. Coin description and classification (12-19th century).
