Objectives

Objectives:
1. Understand the current scenario of access, use and participation processes in digital platforms by specific audiences (special needs, seniors, remote populations, etc.);
2. Discuss the implications of asymmetries in the processes of access, use and participation in the context of new media;
3. Discuss the concepts of digital inclusion and universal design;
4. Understand the different dimensions of the concept of accessibility;
5. Know strategies, resources and materials that facilitate the construction of accessible multimedia solutions;
6. Understand and discuss the potential of communication technologies in supporting student with special needs.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course, students must be able to:
1. Understand the current scenario of access, use and participation processes in digital platforms by specific audiences (special needs, seniors, remote populations, etc.);
2. Discuss the implications of asymmetries in the processes of access, use and participation in the context of new media;
3. Discuss the concepts of digital inclusion and universal design;
4. Understand the different dimensions of the concept of accessibility;
5. Know strategies, resources and materials that facilitate the construction of accessible multimedia solutions;
6. Understand and discuss the potential of communication technologies in supporting student with special needs.

Competencies:
It is expected that the students are able to develop competencies that enable them to act in the current scenarios of diverse digital contexts and users. To this, students should deepen their knowledge in topics related to digital inclusion, universal design and accessibility.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Multimedia and Accessibility teaching activities will be offered in blended learning: students will develop some of the work autonomously, but monitored and tutored.
The contact sessions (face-to-face or at distance) will aim to present and discuss the formal concepts related to the UC global thematic and to support the development of student work. In these sessions the methodologies used will be expositive (to support the presentation of the theoretical concepts), demonstrative (for the presentation of strategies and methodologies of accessibility mechanisms activation and validation) and participative (for discussion, in groups, of ideas and concepts).
For evaluation purposes, students should conduct a research work around a UC theme that will be conducted in three phases: presentation of a preliminary version; final presentation, final work.

Support resources to the teaching activities will be made available in online platforms and will contain the materials used in the face-to-face sessions (slides, documents, resources, etc.), the list of references and links and also the texts that support assessment (objectives, deadlines and criteria).
