Objectives

In tutorial classes the student should understand the functioning, legal framework and potentialities of the various types of archaeological work, in the light of the law in force. The student should also be prepared to develop practical work, seizing and consolidating concepts, as well as the various methodologies applicable to field excavation and archaeological registration.

In the context of field work, the student should achieve the following objectives:
- understand the dynamics of fieldwork in Archaeology in its various forms;
- experiment different tools and develop all kind of essential activities to perform archaeological interventions;
- identify and handle archaeological materials in the context of excavation;
- understand the importance of archaeological field record and learn how to perform it in a rigorous way;
- acquire skills and good practices applicable in different work contexts.

Learning outcomes and competences

The frequency of this Course Unit should provide students with skills to perform fieldwork in Archaeology, ensuring direct experience on archaeological survey and excavation. It is also expected that students acquire skills in the use of cartography and georeferencing, filling arcaheological database, experience intervention techniques and field record, methods of recovery of archaeological materials and preparation of field diary, essential areas to being an archaeologist.

Program

1. Legal framework of the exercise of archaeological activity.
2. Archaeological survey.
3. The excavation (fieldwork experience):     
3.1. The rigorous definition(s) of method(s) to apply, site preparation and organization of the fieldwork, in its various aspects and components.       
3.2. The adequacy of archaeological practice to the various types of context.       
3.3. Means of recovery, processing and separation of archaeological materials, depending on their nature and contexts of origin.       
3.4.The field registration as an activity of central importance to the development of the archaeological intervention and for the implementation of subsequent office work.      
3.5. The filling in the records of stratigraphic unit, the field drawings and the archaeological photography: rules and models for the consolidation of good practice.      
3.6. The interpretation of the archaeological record.
4. Preparation of field work reports: standards and required documentation.

In substitution of the attendance of the tutorial classes, the student should deliver a theoretical work, focused on a topic to be indicated by the teacher.
