To present students with a general overview of the political, economic and social situation of Hispania from the end of the Roman imperial administration to the arrival of Afonso VI of Leon and Castile (1072). Special emphasis will be placed on the would-be Portuguese territory.
It is intended that students of this unit seize the main lines of development of the historical process that followed the dismantling of the Roman Empire in Hispania. They should, as well, be able to use the political, economic and social concepts necessary for the understanding of the above mentioned historical dynamics .
Introduction: the disintegration of the Roman imperial structures in Hispania. 1. The invasion, occupation and reorganization of the Iberian Peninsula by the Barbarians. (5th-8th centuries). 1.1. Constitution and consolidation of the Swabian kingdom. 1.2. A new peninsular unity: the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo. 1.3. Social and economic structures of Hispania under Germanic tribes domination. 2. Muslim Portugal (8th-9th centuries). 2.1. The conquest and the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. 2.2. Political structures: the Emirate, the Caliphate and the first Taifa kingdoms. 2.3. Social and economic structures of Muslim Hispania. 3. From the resistance by northern populations to the Christian Reconquest (8th century to 1065). 3.1. Situation of the territories north of the Douro Valley. 3.2. Formation and expansion of the kingdom of Asturias. 3.3. Integration and territory organization of the region between the rivers Minho and Mondego within the Asturias-León kingdom.
Specific references on different points of the program will be suggested throughout the semester.
Theoretical and practical classes. Tutorial sessions on topics addressed in class. Particular emphasis will be placed on orienting students’ independent study.
