Objectives

This class is designed to help students achieve a good level of autonomy when translating into their second language (English) and to reflect upon their translation-related activities using the appropriate metalanguage.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  • carry out a translation project in a professional way;
  • analyse and translate specialised texts on the basis of their specific communicative situations and paying special attention to terminology, phraseology, information structure, register and style;
  • carefully select and make effective use of the resources used by language service providers;
  • choose the appropriate translation strategy at macro level and the most adequate translation solutions at micro level and justify choices to potential clients;
  • adapt translations to the specific needs and objectives of the target audience and implement a quality assurance plan adapted to each translation project;
  • specialise in different areas with emphasis on personal interests;
  • work in a team and network with other language service professionals with a view to achieving better end products.

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Excellent knowledge of the working languages.

Skills in the following areas: text/context analysis; analysis of communicative situations; translation and intercultural communication skills.

  •        Translating specialized texts into the second language: practical and ethical issues;

  •        Specificities of scientific and technical texts of various types (academic, industrial, commercial, promotional) in English and Portuguese at both macro- and micro-level;

  •        Pragmatic, functional and social constructivist approaches to translation;

  •        Development of skills in researching, working in a team and networking;

  •        Familiarisation with the various phases of a professional translation project.

Short presentations (15 minutes) by teacher and students on specific texts (translation-oriented functional analysis; translation proposal; translation criticism).

Eligibility for exams

ATTENDANCE POLICY Students are expected to attend 75% of classes, unless otherwise agreed. Students who do not comply with this rule will automatically have to opt for taking the final exam.

Assessment:

Formative assessment: Group projects, presentation and participation in class activities (30%).

Summative assessment: Midterm test (30%) and final test (40%)
