Objectives
The objective of this curricular unit is to provide a sound theoretical and practical training in terminology and lexicography, as preparation for future professional translators and language services providers, who increasingly need to know how to research and store information on the general lexicon, and specifically on the terminologies of specialized areas.
Learning outcomes and competences
Students who finish this curricular unit successfully should be able to:
- Know how to find and use the encyclopedias, thesauri, dictionaries, glossaries, general and specialized corpora, databases and other sources of information available in hardcopy and online;
- Know how to use and create corpora for terminology and lexicography work;
- Understand the different levels of specialization of texts and their associated terminology;
- Know how to create terminological and lexical resources using Corpografo, or a similar system;
- Know how to maintain terminological and lexical resources at a professional level;
- Know how to study any specialized domain and its lexicon.

- Introduction to the theories of linguistic universals and linguistic relativism in relation to the lexicon;
- General theories and principles of terminology and lexicography work;
- The analysis of various kinds of encyclopaedias, thesauri, dictionaries, glossaries, general and specialized corpora, databases and other resources and how they relate to the theories explained;
- The relationship between terminology and lexicography and the theories of knowledge representation;
- The creation of corpora and terminology databases using Corpógrafo;
- Research into the terminology of very specific domains.

Teaching methods and learning activities
After the presentation of the theories and practices behind terminology and lexicography, students are expected to explore and discuss the various traditional and online terminological and lexical resources available in the light of this information.
They then learn to use the Corpógrafo, choose a small but very specific area of knowledge, collect comparable corpora, or original texts on the same topic, extract terminology and create a database which includes data on the terms found.
