Objectives

Students are supposed to acquire the knowledge of subject matters specified in the syllabus, as far as the historical and cultural contextualization of English children's literature is concerned. Besides, they should also develop  understandingof the particularities of children's imaginative universe, of their psychological and educational needs, in order to be fully apt to approach them with an appropriate attitude and open critical spirit. The thoroughwork of critical analysis developed within the scope seminars of a choice of both literary and critical texts will enhance students' abilities to teach children with a broader critical mind and a more conscious understanding of the role played by literature and reading in society from the very early stages of childhood. 

 

 

Learning outcomes and competences

Topics proposed by the syllabus aim at conveying to students the specificity of knowledge within the scope of children's studies in order to enable them to teach first cycle children in an adequate and competent way. Therefore, themes will deal with: 1. the necessary definition of the subject's object of study, i.e., children's literature in English, its historical and cultural contextualization; 2. the child viewed as a psychological unit of its own, a human identity with its own voice and views upon the world, which demands a particular approach. 3. the choice of a variety of children's literary texts, covering a wide range of genres, typologies and forms, so as to promote among students an equivalent diversity of approaches and a familiarization with equally diverse techniques of expression and representation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

TP lectures; TO. TP lectures will deal with the theoretical and practical implications of all subjects in the syllabus. Students will be therefore requested to participate actively within TPs and TOs, presenting work, like reading reports or others previously prepared at home. A final work will be demanded to all students to conclude the process of evaluation. Distributed evaluation with no final exam. 60% final project; 40% active participation in class.
