Objectives

Aims: Development of basic knowledge and acquisition of new methods in syntactic and lexical semantics analysis particularly on European Portuguese and some of its varieties.

Learning outcomes and competences

Skills and Learning outcomes:

1. General capacity of linguistic reflection based on some theoretical proposals.
2. Implementation of rigorous methods of linguistic analysis by application of tests.
3. Knowledge of basic aspects of the Lexicon and Syntax of the Portuguese language.
4. General issues concerning text.

The students should acquire basic tools for analyzing the syntactic and semantic nature of verbs and should also have acquired fundamental knowledge of the simple sentences syntax (like possible word orders) as a way to provide quality translations to or from Portuguese.

1. The lexicon contribution: the verbal category
1.1.The verb: categorical and semantic selection
1.2. Types of verbs: full verbs, auxiliary verbs, semi-auxiliary verbs, copulative verbs and light verbs
1.3. Semantic characterization of verbal predicates
1.4. Aspectual classes
1.5. Tense as a deictic category: verbal tenses and adverbials
2. Some constructions involving change of position or number of arguments
2.1. Subject inversion
2.2. Partial interrogatives
2.3. Passive.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Some classes consist of theoretical presentations on the program topics and others will have practical exercises. Oral presentations made by the students during the semester final classes. The topics will be chosen considering identified problems in translation and the research will use a contrastive approach between Portuguese and the other language studied.
