Objectives

The main objectives of this class are:

- to help students become more and more autonomous in their learning of the Italian language and culture;
- to help students develop a clear and accurate use of Italian at advanced level in both speaking and writing in a variety of communicative situations.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

- comprehend a variety of written, oral, and audiovisual texts from different genres (journalistic, academic, scientific, commercial, promotional, etc.) and about different topics with emphasis on students’ personal interests;

- produce a range of written texts (summaries, narrative essays, discursive essays, instructions, formal emails) at upper intermediate level using the appropriate vocabulary, syntactic structures, style and register;

- interact in different communicative situations using the appropriate language register;

- recognize and use lexical and syntactic structures at upper intermediate level;

- recognize and make accurate use of a large number of idiomatic expressions and false friends between Portuguese and Italian.

Students will also be familiar with various historical, political and cultural events that marked the Italian society in the second half of the 20th century.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Knowledge of Italian at C2.1 level.

Written and multimedia texts related to the following topics:

- The Italian political system;

- The Italian legal system;

- Italian culture in the world;

- Historical events through documentaries, films and songs.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Cooperative learning with special emphasis on students' personal interests in specific subthemes. Lectures will be kept to a minimum and great emphasis will be placed on individual and group work in class with the teacher acting mostly as facilitator and supervisor.
