Objectives

Learning objectives of the curricular unit: 
* Demonstrating a greater understanding of grammar at text & extended discourse level;
* Reading, understanding and working autonomously with a wide range of texts;
* Identifying different registers and genres\
* Explaining and summarizing texts. * Deducing & discussing effectively a writer's or speaker’s intended purpose & meaning, effectiveness of grammatical structures used, overall efficacy of the text under scrutiny;
* Demonstrating a broader knowledge of the English-speaking world e.g. socio-cultural knowledge, appreciation of cultural diversity, etc

Learning outcomes and competences

Students by the end of the first semester will be used to working autonomously a a wide range of texts.  They should be able to identify different registers and purposes, as well as being able to summarise texts.

 Syllabus: * Grammar study: an inductive/descriptive approach, closely parallel to text analysis/study & writing skills; * Reading comprehension of ungraded texts; * Development of specialised vocabulary; * Critical listening; listening to lectures & note-taking; * Interpreting complex arguments and specialized communication; * Writing summaries, emails, topic-based and academic texts; * Class discussions & oral contributions, with practice in delivering speeches & discoursing from notes; * Theme-based exploration of potential translation texts, including specific microculture-based themes
