To provide students with information about the latest interpretation trends in the history of Portuguese administrative structures in order to offer them a diachronic view regarding: 1. The evolution of the Portuguese municipal structure (concelhia); 2. The structures: Provincial, Comarcã and Provedorias 3. The Casas da Relação (House of Porto and House of Lisbon) and their significance; 4. The development of the terminology for cities and villages, their meaning and extent; 5. The administrative bodies of the different structures.
In the first two courses address the sources for the study of the Portuguese administrative structures, using references to collections of most interest to the matter. Later, in lectures and theoretical-practical develop the syllabus listed, reserving units OT for discussion over the course of the research, clarifying aspects which may have been less clear, trying to adjust the information especially for students areas of training that was not based in history. Thus demand that everyone can achieve the goals set for the course.
1 – Local and municipal history. Goals, sources, local history methodologies. Local and national history. Research topics in local history. The economy, society, civilization and culture. Oral sources and traditions. 1. The origin of the Portuguese medieval boroughs The situation at the time of the Reconquest. The importance of medieval charters. The overcrowded Christian North and the Islamic South. Municipal titles/positions of Muslim origin. 3- The strategies of the Crown for creating municipalities (concelhos) in the Middle Ages Rural and urban municipalities. Evolution after the reconquest of the Algarve. The rise of the local middle class and the world of arts and crafts. 4- The Crown’s centralization effort and municipal autonomy. Afonso II’s general laws. Progress under Afonso III and D. Dinis. The Regimento dos Corregedores (1332 and 1340) 5 – Administrative organization in modern Portugal Long-term oranization: Províncias, Comarcas/Ouvidorias and Provedorias Occasional organization: Relação and Casa do Porto and their meaning in the judicial and administrative organization of Portugal 6 - Forais manuelinos (Manueline Charters) Origins, types, and relevance for the study of local economies and societies. Their importance for municipal organization. 7 - Royal officers in regional and local administration 8 - Municipalism in the modern age: institutions and key players The tradition of municipal autonomy versus the absolute monarchy’s effort to centralize. 9 - Main municipal services Administration of municipal property, municipal supplies, the economy, public works, safety and hygiene, health care, education. Military defense. Assistance and charities. 10 - Municipal finances 11 - Social aspects of municipal administration 12. Local and regional authorities in contemporary history
Apart from the literature cited as mandatory, will be referred to other works that students may consult.
Lectures on theory will be complemented with field trips.
