Objectives

This course is essentially of a practical nature and aimed at:
- developing students’ translation competence,
- raising students’ awareness towards the different types of text and the various implications involved in the process of translating;

Learning outcomes and competences

 

Students who successfully complete this class will: • be able to analyse texts of various types paying special attention to the macro and micro linguistic levels (collocations, phraseology, terminology, information structure, register and style); • be able to select the most appropriate general translation strategy as well as the most adequate translation solutions at the various levels of the text so as to fulfil the function of the translation according to the translation brief and the communicative situation (including to be able to adapt their translations to the specific needs and objectives of the target audience); • be fully familiar with all the different phases of a professional translation project; • be able to work in a translation team and to network with other language service professionals with a view to achieving better translation solutions.

 This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to deal with “real life” translation work. The choice of texts will cover various topics and the texts will be of different types. Texts will be subject to thorough analysis at all levels (collocations, phraseology, terminology, information structure, register and style) and students will be asked to make use of several resources used by professional translators. They will work individually, but also as part of a team.
