Objectives

It is the aim of this course to:

1. Develop the students’ critical awareness of the nature of translation;

2. Develop the knowledge of the characteristics of several text types;

3. Develop the students’ translating skills;

4. Further the students’ linguistic skills in English and Portuguese in a general way;

5. Acquaint students with tools and resources that are relevant for the translator.

Learning outcomes and competences

The course will further the development of practical and critical skills in translation.

By the end of the semester, students are expected to be capable of producing coherent and accurate Portuguese translations of English texts of some degree of complexity, as well as of acknowledging the characteristics of such texts and of reflecting on the adequacy of the several possible translation strategies.

This is an essentially practical course. Work in this course will consist mainly in translation and in the discussion of translations of short texts of several different types. The work of translation and translation analysis will take place alongside a systematic consideration of relevant conceptual and discursive points, namely the following:

- the concept of translation;

- the concept of equivalence;

- text types and registers of discourse;

- translation strategies.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  This course is not suitable for students without very good skills in the Portuguese language.

Practical lessons: translations exercises with discussion, revision, comparison, etc; critical analysis of translations.
