Objectives

This course unit is designed for students to:
Understand and apply concepts of urbanism and urban morphology.
Understand and discuss the conceptual framework in which urbanism and urban morphology are integrated.
Analyze and understand the evolution of urbanism and urban form.
Develop skills related to the analysis and understanding of current urban areas.
Acquire skills for intervention in current urban areas, promoting the application of geographic research knowledge, methods and techniques.

2. The evolution of urbanism and urban form: main undertakings, the Classical Period and the Middle Ages; from the Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution.
3. Nineteenth-century urbanism: principles, agents, major undertakings and their influence on the discipline and the city of today.
4. Urbanism of the 20th century: principles, agents, major undertakings and their influence on the city of today.
5. Urban form and urbanism: recent dynamics.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures and debates.

Theoretical and practical classes, in which the students must do an individual work. The answer to challenges and problems will be given by students, which will be supported by readings, debates and teacher’s follow-up.

Eligibility for exams

Attend at least 75% of classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Individual works are worth 50% of final grade. Written test is worth 50% of final grade. To obtain a positive grade in this subject, the student must have a minimum grade of 7.5 in each component (in a scale from 0 to 20). If the student does not present individual practical work, he must take an oral exam. This oral exam only takes place if the student has a minimum grade of 7.5 in the final exam.

Classification improvement

Written and oral exam are mandatory.
