Objectives

The main goals of this subject are: to deepen and to consolidate statistical concepts in the treatment of information applied to social sciences, namely regarding practical examples in geographical analysis in its physical and human components.

Learning outcomes and competences

Learning skills By the end of the semestre, the student should demonstrate:

- Knowledge of basic techniques of data exploration and inferencial analysis of quantitative data applied to sociology;

- Critical and reflexive stand in data analysis.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Theoretical lessons ** 1. Introduction to statistical analysis. Data exploration (outliers, homogeneity, normality, missing cases, collinearity and independence). 2. Parametric (t-test, one-way and two-way ANOVA) and non-parametric statistics for independent and paired samples among others. 3. Regression methods. Foundations and concepts. Linear and multiple regression. 4. Logistic regression. 5. Cluster analysis (hierarchical and non-hierarchical methods). 6. Classification and regression trees (algorithm, recursive partitioning and model performance). 7. Principal componente analysis (covariance matrix, communallities, KMO and Bartlett tests, eigenvalues and screeplot).
