Geomorphology and Coastal Planning
Instance: 2010/2011 - 2S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
. Understand some of the hydrological constraints that affect the dynamics of coastlines (synthesis and review of the subject matter taught in the optional course unit included in the Undergraduate program).
. Basic knowledge of Geomorphology and the dynamics of rocky and sandy coastlines (synthesis and review of the subject matter taught in the optional course unit included in the Undergraduate program).
. Discussion of coastal planning issues and coastal plans.
. Case studies.
Program
1. Introduction. Presentation of the aims, program, teaching methods and assessment components.
2. Motivations for the study of coastlines. The coastline as the interface between terrestrial , hydrological and atmospheric phenomena.
3. Coastal dynamics (waves, currents, tides, sea level variations), the associated risks and their mitigation.
4. Rocky coastlines: morphology and evolution processes.
5. Coastal beaches and dunes: the issue of coastal erosion.
6. Fragilities versus need for coastal planning. Some coastal planning principles.
Teaching methods and learning activities
The course will be taught via e-learning (Moodle platform).
By using this platform, students will have access to documents beforehand, allowing for them to prepare in advance the subject matters to be taught, so that they can more actively participate in theoretical-practical classes.
