Objectives

Based on a contextualized and comparative methodology, this Seminar aims to describe and evaluate the most important Romanesque creations of 12th to 14th century literature, seeking, on the one hand, to demonstrate in which ways they acquire a unique and significant efficacy, and, on the other hand, to emphasise how they are integrated in the imagery and cultural paradigms that cross over this period.

Program

1. The figure of the "domina" in the context of suzerainty in Western Europe.
a. Conditions for promoting the female mythology;
b. Occitan "fin'amors" as a form of representation of the aristocratic society of the northwest Mediterranean;
c. Processes and rhythms of irradiation in Occitan models;
d. Service of love and vassalic service;

2. Cavalry and matrimonial strategies.
a. From the art of cavalry to the ideology of chivalry;
b. The "roman" and the hypergamous foundation of cavalry;
c. Hypergamous instinct and troubadour renunciation: coexistence and opposition;
d. The myth of Lancelot: return and amplification of the principle of dispute over a woman.

3. Genealogical lineage and vision of the world.
a. From cavalry to nobility: the assertion of lineage;
b. Strategies of identity and legitimacy: literature and divine favour;
c. The Grail and the construction phases of the ideology of lineage;
d. Royalty and cavalry: a conflicted sharing of warrior function.
