Objectives

O Curso propõe uma articulação entre três momentos complementares:
a. O estudo da criação dramática de William Shakespeare e dos dramaturgos seus contemporâneos através de curta selecção de peças ordenadas segundo um eixo temático;
b. A apreensão por parte dos estudantes da dimensão estética e da flexibilidade criativa da língua inglesa num estádio crucial da sua fixação histórica e literária;
c. A failiarização com a obra dos dramaturgos isabelinos, com Shakespeare no seu âmago, e o desenvolvimento de perspectivas críticas que estimulem a leitura das peças do programa nas suas dimensões literária e espectacular.

The Serpent under it: Faces of Evil in the TYragedy of Shakespeare and the Playwrights of his time.

A figura do vilão em Richard III e em Othello dão vida ao tremendo poder persuasivo da palavra e da representação: Richard of Gloucester e Iago, encenadores e actores ardilosos sob a capa da virtude que lhes cobre as muitas faces do mal, dirigem acontecimentos, atitudes e sentimentos, e movimentam os jogos da serpente, presença subtil oculta atrás das máscaras do evasivo ou das formas opacas de acções e intenções que igualmente atravessam a intriga de The Duchess of Malfi, de John Webster, um exemplo destacado da rica produção dos dramaturgos contemporâneos de Shakespeare.
