Objectives

Aims:

Foreword: A proposed political reading of the Portuguese Middle Ages, with particular focus on the period 1279-1520, and a proposal for a typology of powers and a specific study of the “multiple powers” of that time.

1) Familiarise students with the issue of “splendour/crisis/renovation” of Political History, taking into account Portuguese Historiography during the Middle Ages.
2) Familiarise students with certain basic concepts and methods, e.g., political society, prosopography, Modern State …
3) Propose a chronology for the key events (1279-1521) and justify it properly.
4) Under the plurality of powers in the Middle Ages, provide students with essential knowledge about the royal, secular ecclesiastic, secular municipal and seigniorial powers, and their inter-relations and conflicts.
5) Familiarise students with some essential sources for the History of Powers.
