Objectives
To draw the students' attention to the main ideological and cultural movements of the Portuguese society, from the rise of Liberalism to the end of "Estado Novo".
To understand and interpret the main cultural manifestations, and ideological leaders of Portugal's contemporary society.
Using contexts to compare Portugal´s cultural tendencies and mentality with other European countries.
To acquire independent learning strategies and to develop interpretation and critical analysis skills.
Program
1. Subject presentation: teaching methodologies, assessment options and criteria, sources and bibliography.
2. Contemporary essayism: reflections on Portuguese culture and national identity.
3. 19th-century Portuguese culture: the dichotomy between decadence and regeneration.
3.1. From the paradigm of the Enlightenment to the cultural revolution of the Romanticism.
3.2. Liberal culture: founders, symbols and productions.
3.3. The generations of 1848 and 1870: ideas and personalities.
3.4. The Republican Messianism. Positivism. Anti-clericalism. Laicisation.
3.5. Ultimatum and Fin-de-Siècle Crisis.
4. The Republic between tradition and modernism.
4.1. Sanctification of the society and construction of the republican motherland.
4.2. Cultural, ideological and artistic diversity and plurality during the 1st Republic.
4.3. The Intellectuals and the Nation: cultural movements and groups.
5. Culture and Propaganda: symbols and strategies of the "Estado-Novo".
5.1. Authority and conservatism: the triad of “God, Motherland and Family”.
5.2. Official culture and Politics of the Spirit. The SPN (Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional) and the SNI (Secretariado Nacional de Informação)
5.3. Nationalism and "Portugality". The imperial mystique.
5.3. Between norm and rupture: ideological control and cultural resistance.
5.4. Decline of the "Estado-Novo", and changes in cultural life (1958-1974).
