Objectives

To identify the main functional and morphological characteristics of the urban space in Porto.
To understand the city’s evolutive process, in different rhythms and contexts.
To understand the city’s (and the surrounding urban space) heterogeneity in its regional and metropolitan context.
To identify the main agents and the conditions for the city’s transformation and government.
To identify the great challenges and projects, in several scales of the city.

Program

Urbanism, urban morphology and the importance of historical antecedents in the city’s understanding.
Residence and social issues.
Economical structure, dynamics and spatial distribution of the industry, commerce and services.
Green spaces.
Transportation and mobility.
Urban policy, planning and projects.
Recent dynamics: from the city to the metropolis in an expanded urban context; downtown and secondary centres, bearing in mind an enhanced polycentrism.
Current problems, challenges and expectations given the current difficulties in competitiveness, sustainability, cohesion and government.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lessons with an expositive component. Lectures and debate sessions; field trips.
