Objectives

This subject is designed for students to:
1. Broaden their visual and literary insights through the analysis of a selection of pictorial and literary works related to each other;
2. Become aware of the theoretical and critical tools to analyze the relationship between pictorial and literary;
3. Further their understandings on the modalities of such relationship in 19th-century French Literature.

Program

I. Introduction.
1. Historical perspective on the relationships between literature and the visual arts in Western culture from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century.
2. Theoretical and critical tools.
II. Discourse of literature and art from Romanticism to Symbolism.

In this subject, along with pictorial works, a selection of poetical, narrative and critical texts will be analyzed in class, namely:

General, theoretical and critical bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the semester. Specific bibliographical references for each topic comprised in the subject programme will be given throughout the semester.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Minimum pass mark in the final exam.
As an alternative, pass mark calculated from the average sum between the marks awarded to the assignments (if positive) and that obtained in one part of the final exam. Students enrolled in the latter assessment modality are required to attend at least 2/3 of classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final exam counts for 100% of the final mark (corresponding to 20 marks on a scale of 0-20).
As an alternative, the mark resulting from the average sum of the marks awarded to the assignments counts for 50% of the final mark and the mark obtained in one part of the final exam counts for another 50%.
