Abstract (EN):
In the long history of brands and appellations of origin, Port wine has assumed a recognised pioneering role, both nationally and internationally, due to the commercial importance acquired in markets far from the production region, especially the British, as well as the strong competitiveness between the agents involved in this trade. But if the history of Port wine is known in its general lines, the same cannot be said about the history of the various companies and commercial brands which, seeking to value tradition as an element of distinction and prestige, created their own history, often legendary, without reasonable documental basis. Due to a long indifference of Portuguese historiography towards the history of one of the most important and earliest internationalised products of the Portuguese economy, this situation has been changing in recent decades, allowing for the discovery of new research directions. In the specific field of trademarks, as we will try to demonstrate from the case of the company/brand Köpke, researchers today have the dual mission of building the history of these companies and brands and deconstructing and interpreting the «invented traditions» that have often been associated with them over time.
