Resumo (PT): Este artigo centra-se na afirmação e sustentabilidade da vinha e do vinho, em articulação com a cerealicultura, no território do Douro Superior, e segue como linhas de análise três fases da sua evolução vinhateira: a primeira, embrionária e de reduzida expressão comercial, anterior à filoxera; a segunda, de lenta mas progressiva afirmação, do último quartel do século XIX às demarcações de 1907-1908, com o reconhecimento institucional do alargamento da Região Demarcada do Douro até à fronteira com Espanha; a terceira, ocorrida no decurso do século XX, que corresponde ao desenvolvimento e consolidação vitivinícola desta sub-região, hoje produtora de vinho do Porto e vinhos DOC de elevada qualidade. Integra-se num vasto campo de pesquisa sobre o processo de transformações do espaço regional duriense1, a expansão do vinhedo com diferenças intra-regionais e as alterações económicas e institucionais no sector do vinho do Porto, no decurso do arco temporal considerado.

Abstract (EN): This article focuses on the affirmation and sustainability of vines and wine, articulated with cereal farming in the Douro Superior, and analises three phases of its vineyard evolution: the first, embryonic and of reduced commercial expression, prior to the phylloxera outbreak; the second, of progressive affirmation, from the last quarter of the 19th century to the demarcations of 1907-1908, with the institutional recognition of the enlargement of the Douro Demarcated Region to the border with Spain; the third, in the course of 20th century, corresponding to the development and wine consolidation of this sub-region, which today produces Port wine and high quality DOC wines.
