International Student
Beneficiaries:
Students who
are not Portuguese/EU nationals are considered international students.
Contrarily, students in the following situations do not benefit from this status:
- Albeit not being from a European Union member state, those who have been permanently living in Portugal for an uninterrupted period of more than two years, from 1 January of the year of enrolment. This is equally applicable to children legally residing with them.
- Students who, come 1 January of the year of enrolment, enjoy equal rights and duties in the scope of an international agreement between Portugal and their country of birth;
- Students who are already attending a Portuguese higher education institution as part of mobility or exchange programmes;
- Students with dual citizenship, one being Portuguese.
Additionally, students shall
comply with one of the requirements pertaining to U.Porto’s International Student Status:
- Having completed upper secondary education or equivalent, with a diploma issued by an upper secondary school or by competent bodies within the Ministry of Education;
- Having a diploma or certificate issued by a competent body in their country of origin, certifying the completion of an education programme and attesting to their right to access a higher education institution in Portugal.

Statement regarding the Status of Equal Rights and Duties
The international student will maintain the international student status until the end of the cycle of studies in which he or she initially enrolled, except for those who acquire, after entry, the nationality of a member state of the European Union. In this case, the cessation of the international student status takes effect in the academic year following the date of proof of acquisition of nationality.
