Students

2nd cycles of study (Masters) last two school years. In the first year, students shall attend different curricular units, while in the second year they shall complete their dissertation/internship.

Appointment of Dissertation Director and Choice of Dissertation Topic:

Upon registration renewal, students enrolled in a 2nd cycle of studies shall present a form (Masters degree | Master's Degree Guidance - Individual student file) or (Masters in Teaching | Master's in Teaching - Individual student file) signed by the dissertation director, indicating both the dissertation topic and the name of the dissertation director.

Admission to Masters viva voce (public oral examination)- 2024/25

Deadline for submitting your Dissertation and for requesting an examination date (2nd cycle with 90 Ects):
  • Regular exam period - up to 31 May;
  • Supplementary period- up to July 31;
  • Special period for conclusion of Cycles of Studies - enrolment from 1 to 29 July upon payment of ¤12 fee as per U.Porto’s Table of Fees. - Deadline for submission between 01 and 30 September 2025.

2nd cycle - MEBI (Master's in Teaching English in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education)

Deadline for requesting and submitting the Dissertation/Project (2nd cycle with 90 Ects):
  • Normal Season - until 29 February 2024;
  • Special Season - registration takes place from 25 to 29 March 2024 with a fee of 12 euros, according to the U.P. fees table - Deadline for submission of the final work - from 21 to 30 April 2024.

2nd cycle - MEBI (Master's in Teaching English in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education) - Cycle of studies of 90 ECTS

Deadline for requesting and submitting the Dissertation/Project:

  • Regular Period - up to 28 February 2025;
  • Special Period—Registration takes place from 25 to 29 March 2025 with a payment of 12 euros, according to the U.P. fees table. The deadline for submission of the final work is 30 April 2025.

2nd Cycle - Master's Degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics - Cycle of Studies of 90 ECTS

Deadline for requesting and submitting the dissertation/internship report:

  • Regular period - up to 28 February 2025
  • Supplementary period - up to 30 March 2025
  • Special period for conclusion of cycle of studies - up to 30 April 2025, with a fee of 12 euros, according to the U.P. fees table.
    According to the General Council, students enrolled in a Cycle of Studies of 90 ECTS pay 50% of the tuition fee in the third semester. However, students who submit their dissertation/internship report after 1 May must pay another 50% of the tuition fee.
    As for the length of the final dissertation/internship report texts, the FLUP Scientific Council has approved that they should be between 50 and 100 pages long.



Rules for submitting the application for admission to exams:

  1. The student must have completed all the units that make up the study cycle plan, with the exception of the Dissertation/Internship Report/Project Work/Initiation into Professional Practice course unit;
  2. Tuition fees situation regularised;
  3. The final version of the work, the application for admission to the master's exams signed by the supervisor, the curriculum vitae, the declaration for publication and the document Juri_Classificação de "Projetos/Dissertações em "percurso académico - opção "Projetos/Dissertações/Teses" must be submitted to the information system. No changes are allowed after uploading.

Rules to request a dissertation viva:

  1. Request for admission for viva voce examination signed by the dissertation director;
  2. Upload on Sigarra of a digital version of the dissertation, as well as of the student’s curriculum vitae;
  3. The student must have completed all curricular units within the course’s study plan, except Dissertation/Internship Report/Project/Introduction to Professional Practice;
  4. Payment of tuition fees up to date;
  5. Alongside the request for the viva examination, the student shall also upload the final version of their work on Sigarra, with no changes allowed after submission;
  6. Procedures to publish the Dissertation/Internship Report/Project/Introduction to Professional Practice.


Dissertation formatting rules:

  • 50 to 100 pages, Calibri font, size 12, 1.5 spacing between lines (excluding appendixes) as per the Deliberation of the Scientific Council of 15 November, 2017.
  • Mandatory use of FLUP’s template standard format (including cover)..
  • Mandatory use of the Orthographic Agreement of 1990.


Doctoral Thesis


Students enrolling in the 2nd year must submit the following document each year:
The subject of the doctoral thesis and the name of the supervisor on the appropriate form (Doctoral Orientation and Thesis Registration - Individual Student File). The form must be signed by the supervisor and sent to the director of the respective cycle of studies

Cycle of Studies in Information and Communication on Digital Platforms

- Deadline for requesting Public Examinations in year of termination 2024/25:

Resolution no. 53/2012, of 4 December, authorizes the operation until 31 July 2025 of the PhD in Information and Communication in Digital Platforms (ACEF/1819/0214112).’, i.e., the deadline for requesting exams will be 31 July 2025. After this date, no more requests for public exams will be accepted within the scope of the ICDP.’

Admission to Doctoral viva voce, 2024/25 - Public Defense

Deadline for submission of Dissertation and for requesting an examination date:
  • Regular Season - up to 31 May;
  • Supplementary season - up to 31 July;
  • Special period for conclusion of Cycles of Studies - Dissertation submission between 1 and 30 September 2025.

Dissertation formatting rules:
  • 200 to 400 pages, Calibri font, size 12, 1.5 spacing between lines (excluding appendixes) as per the Deliberation of the Scientific Council of 15 November, 2017.
  • Mandatory use of FLUP’s template’s standard format (including cover).
  • Mandatory use of the Orthographic Agreement of 1990.

Rules to submit a Doctoral Dissertation:

The final version of the Dissertation/thesis, the request for admission to doctoral viva voce exam signed by the dissertation/thesis supervisor, the curriculum vitae, the declaration for publication and the document Juri_Classificação must be uploaded in the student’s page  in "academic pathway - option "Projects/Dissertation/Thesis”. No changes are allowed after uploading.
Payment of a 500 euros request fee.


Public viva exam

The student will be notified of the constitution of a jury and of the viva exam date.
They may also check the situation status on Sigarra (upon authentication, click on name, and then on “thesis”);
Information regarding date and venue of the public viva exam will be published on Sigarra.

Procedures after viva exam:

  • Delivery of a paper and computerised version of the thesis to the National Library of Portugal.
