Masters in Tourism

InformationThe course/CS does not admit students in 2016/2017.

The Master’s degree in Tourism of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (MTUR) had its first edition in 2009 and is one of the teaching areas for development of the University. The course aims to provide students with the necessary scientific competences in fields closely associated to tourism, such as in Economics, Geography, History and Sociology, but also to improve their knowledge in other areas, namely Nutrition, Environment, Sports, Law, Engineering, Marketing or Spatial Planning, and provide them information from a wide range of subjects vital to study and plan Tourism activities. Throughout this cycle of studies, students will also be able to apply analysis methodologies and test specific explanatory models that have contributed to the characterization of this very particular field of study and research, as well as to increase our knowledge about the features and potential of touristic regions or to improve the dynamics of activities associated to tourism.

The Masters course is basically organised in four major topics: Single-disciplinary scientific training – promoting an in-depth study of scientific areas related to tourism through the application of analysis methodologies and explanatory models, and through encouraging the debate on tourism planning; Multidisciplinary scientific training – stimulating the cooperation and exchange of knowledge between the different scientific fields involved to promote the development of tourism related activities; Capacity to adapt – training post-graduates to find creative solutions to solve new problems, but also to anticipate the quick changes faced by tourism; Student training – improving the ability to manage time and resources; developing critical thinking; improving oral and written communication skills, group work and intercultural and interpersonal relationships; encouraging student mobility within the European area, namely through the ERASMUS Programme.

The objective of the Masters Course in Tourism is to prepare both tourism industry professionals interested in complementing and improving their knowledge and share their own personal experiences, and young post-graduates who seek to consolidate their knowledge in the Masters Course scientific fields and find professional careers in this activity, which is unquestionably central for the Portuguese, European and world economy.
