Geography and Scientific Agents

DGEO001 - ECTS To know sources and institutions producers of basic, statistics and cartographic information.
Meet people, projects and institutions that perform scientific research, in particular in the field of geography, giving priority to the areas of interest of students' research.
Deepen the knowledge and understanding of the links between fundamental and applied knowledge

Research Theories and Methods in Geography

DGEO005 - ECTS The discipline will consider in-depth theoretical and empirical framework, intending to give students a solid education and training in the field of the epistemology of science, discussing the thinking environments that marked the trends and the frames of reference to scientific research in different relevant periods, particularly the latest developments and the main trends.
With regard to the present time, it is intended to present and discuss how different disciplinary areas produce and reproduce knowledge, with emphasis on the social sciences and geography. The central objectives are:
-Discuss theoretical dimension elements that favor the understanding of facts or geographical nature processes.
-To present and discuss different methodologies used in scientific research in geography.

Project Supervision Seminar

DGEO011 - ECTS Enhance the debate and learning in the interest thematic of the students' research.
Conducting research for thesis – through regular meetings with the scientific advisors, the doctoral candidate begins construction of his thesis project: sets the theme, chronology and the territory, the questions of departure, make a first survey of sources and bibliography and builds the first provisional plan. In addition, identifies the difficulties expected (for example, accessibility or of understanding the sources, of accessibility and understanding of the bibliography) and draws up a provisional schedule.
The student must provide evidence of scientific publication, at least one text for editing of the "Cadernos" edited by The PhD course in geography.

Considerando o tempo disponível para a investigação, pretende-se desenvolver capacidades individuais de investigação, com recurso essencialmente ao estudo, apresentação e debate de casos de investigações pessoais em curso ou concluídas, com realce para as dissertações de doutoramento em Geografia e também através da apresentação e debate de projetos dos alunos inscritos no curso.
