Objectives
This programme is designed to resume the study of 20th century French Literature (introduced in French Literature I -1st semester), but focussing now on poetry. Upon completing this subject, students should be able to read and analyze modern/contemporary poetical texts.
Program
20th-century French Poetry: some trends and different voices.
1. From the idea of poetry to writing the poem: introductory aspects.
1.1. Incidences and projections of the ‘Beacons’ of Poetic Modernity.
2. Early 20th-century Vanguards.
2.1. Apollinaire: between tradition and the New Spirit of ‘Ardent Reason’. Arranging poetic language spatially. Analysis of
Calligrammes.
2.2. Surrealist Adventure(s): aesthetical principles and ethical outlines.
3. Appeal of immediate History: Poetry and Resistance.
4. Post-War Poetics: language experiences and questioning what is real.
4.1. Francis Ponge:
Le parti-pris des choses (‘Siding with things’).
4.2. Lorand Gaspar: at the crossroads of worlds and perceptions. Analysis of
Sol absolu et autres texts.
(Besides the study of poetic and meta-poetic texts by other writers, classes will basically concern the analysis of
Calligrammes by Apollinaire and
Sol absolu et autres texts by Lorand Gaspar. Both are available in the ‘Poésie/Gallimard’ pocket edition).
