Objectives
This subject focuses on the contemporary French novel and aims to establish a connection between literary history and text analysis, paying particular attention to the study and issues of what we believe to be one of the main trends in 20th and 21st-century writing: «to take the poetic experience and the philosophical experience of language as far as possible » (J. Derrida).
Program
- Historical contexts and aesthetical assumptions of early 20th-century French novel;
- La Nouvelle Revue française and the return to «classicism»: L’immoraliste de André Gide;
- Novel and Surrealism: Le Rivage des Syrtes by Julien Gracq ;
- Crisis of language and experimentation: Moderato Cantabile by Marguerite Duras;
- Terrasse à Rome by Pascal Quignard, a new «classicism»?
