To develop students’ critical reasoning so that they can attain better skills as teachers of Portuguese, based on the topics dealt with during the seminar sessions.
To enable the students to deal critically with topics related to this curricular unit and to write academic works with the rigor required at this level.
1. Preliminary remarks concerning the central topic of Lingusitics, Neuroscience of Language and Psycholinguistics. 2. Acquisition and learning in the framework of L1 3. Second language or foreign language? 4. Bilingualism/Plurilingualism from the perspective of Psycholinguistics. a. Bilingualism as a continuum b. Classical models of language acquisition and the models of memory c. Lexical representation in L1 and L2. 5. Different environments in L2 acquisition. a. Critical periods in the acquisition/learning and in comparison with L2 acquisition. b. Contextual and physiological implications of such acquisition/learning and its mode of processing c. The bilingual’s dominant language and its meaning as for articulation and working memory. d. The influence of L1 proficiency on L2 proficiency. e. Attrition in L1. 6. Information processing and individual differences regarding foreign language as a variable.
