Objectives

1. Consolidation and development of syntactic knowledge in particular of some complex sentences.

2. Learning of new ways of looking at some semantic aspects of Portuguese taking into account the semantics of words like nouns or the semantics of aspect and mood and their influence at sentence and discourse levels. 

3. Development and application of previous topics to the study of text, especially focusing on how they can support text cohesion and coherence.

4. Comparative approach, whenever possible, between varieties of Portuguese and also between languages.    

Learning outcomes and competences

Skills and Learning outcomes: 

1. General capacity of linguistic reflection based on some theoretical proposals.

2. Implementation of rigorous methods in linguistic analysis by application of tests.

3. Knowledge of basic aspects of noun phrases including semantics of nouns, quantifiers and determiners.

4. Basic knowledge of the syntax of some complex sentences (subordination and coordination).

5. Capacity to apply some of the topics studied to texts.

As Portuguese shows some specificities, these learning outcomes are very valuable for translations to or from Portuguese.

Comments from the literature

During the semester, more information about pages chapters and/ or pages, and supplementary bibiography will be provided.

Teaching methods and learning activities

1. Some classes consist of theoretical presentations on the program topics.

2. In other classes, practical exercises will be conducted.

3. There will be short presentations made by students at the end of the semester. Each presentation is on a topic chosen from the syllabus and it will be carried out in a comparative perspective, as it must involve the languages studied in the course. The chosen topics aim to deepen knowledge about identified translation problems.
