Objectives

Learning objectives of the curricular unit:
* Demonstrate a greater understanding of grammar at text & extended discourse level;
* Read, understand and work autonomously with a wide range of texts;
* Identify different registers and genres;
* Explain and summarise texts; 
* Deduce & discuss effectively a writer's or speaker’s intended purpose & meaning, effectiveness of grammatical structures used, overall efficacy of the text under scrutiny;
* Demonstrate a broader knowledge of the English-speaking world e.g. socio-cultural knowledge, appreciation of cultural diversity, etc

Learning outcomes and competences

Students and the end of the second semester should be completely autonomous in their use of English and be able to deal with any type of text or situation using Englsh.

  •  Course programme:

  • Grammar study: an inductive/descriptive approach, closely parallel to text analysis/study & writing skills;

  • Reading comprehension of ungraded texts;

  • Development of specialised vocabulary;

  • Critical listening; listening to lectures & note-taking;

  • Interpreting complex arguments and specialized communication;

  • Writing summaries, emails, topic-based and academic texts;

  • Class discussions & oral contributions, with practice in delivering speeches & discoursing from notes;

  • Theme-based exploration of potential translation texts, including specific microculture-based themes.

  • All students must print the learning materials for this level of English and bring a ‘hard copy’ to every class.

  • All students must switch off or silence and put away their mobile phones before the class starts.

Calculation formula of final grade

Presentation of a theme related to translation: 40%. Test, including summary writing and C2 level exam material: 40%. Participation: 10%.

Examinations or Special Assignments

RESITS. Students may only repeat ONE written test for which they have a negative mark. Students must inform their teacher in writing (via email) which test they wish to repeat so that their names are generated automatically for the ‘recurso’ marks list on Sigarra.

Students who wish to improve their final mark may only repeat ONE written test. Students must inform their teacher in writing (via email) which test they wish to repeat.
