I. General Aims: 1. To discuss the issue of the formative-cognitive and socio-affective values associated to teaching the Mother Language; 2. To understand the relationship between mother language teaching and teaching-learning of other curricular and non-curricular subjects; 3. To develop, select and adapt scientific referential knowledge to the needs, stages and paces of the students? learning process; 4. To become acquainted with effective, diversified teaching methods and strategies, adjusted to mother language teaching; 5. To become acquainted with pedagogical-didactic tools and available resources and use them in real circumstances. II. Specific Aims: 1. To prepare planning projects, didactical units and Portuguese Language and Portuguese Literature classes with a view to achieving a competent management of the Programmes, at different levels and school years; 2. To prepare materials adapted to the mother language teaching; 3. To prepare assessment tools for different aspects of the subject.
The overall objectives are achieved in every aspect of the program, as it is intended, through it, to explore the cognitive and socio-emotional value of Mother Tongue teaching, including its importance to other curricular and non-curricular areas, and to deepen scientific knowledge that may promote the practice of teaching. Students are expected to learn teaching methods and strategies that are efficient diverse and well adapted,as well as the pedagogical-didactic means and resources available to adopt them in concrete circumstances. The specific goals are mainly articulated in the program's 3rd point that relates mostly to the practical component and contemplates the preparation of various individual and group essays and papers, promoting a better understanding of how to plan teaching units, lessons and assignments, evaluate existing materials and construct other documents and assessment tools, in what regards the pedagogy of reading and oral language (listening/speaking).
1. Current situation of Portuguese language teaching. 1.1. Brief history of mother language teaching in Portugal in the last 50 years. 1.2. Mother language teaching: object and objectives. 1.3. Critical analysis of Portuguese Language and Portuguese Literature curricula. 2. Theoretical-methodological issues 2.1. Importance of scientific knowledge as a condition for a grounded practice. 2.2. Language didactics and Literature didactics. 2.2.1. Importance of literary texts for the development of linguistic competence. 2.2.2. Specific problems concerning teaching from the 7th to the 9th grades (Pt. 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico): 2.2.2.1. Reading pedagogy. 2.2.2.2. Training of basic literary skills. 2.2.2.3. Oral pedagogy (speaking/ listening skills) 3. Pedagogical practice 3.1. Planning didactic units, classes and tasks at different levels of Primary and Secondary education. 3.2. Preparing assessment tools for several areas in mother language teaching. 3.3. Preparing didactic tools and material for mother language teaching. 3.4. Critical appreciation of manuals and other available didactic tools.
