Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:
1 – select the conceptual and practical tools to identify and classify heritage within the Portuguese legal framework;
2 – be familiar with the various potential uses of such tools;
3 – recognize which methodologies enhance the use of heritage as a source of scientific knowledge; 4 – recognize which methodologies enhance the use of heritage as physical and material value worth preserving;
1 - Domain of the origin and historical development of notions of heritage and respective problematics associated;
2 - Development of the capacity for reflection and critical analysis about the notions of heritage and its historical uses and policies;
3 - Development of learning skills and increased autonomy;
Syllabus:
1. Heritage concepts: natural and cultural heritage; material and immaterial heritage
2. Heritage as an economic resource and a source of a people’s identity
3. Principles and methods for the identification of heritage "values": territories (landscapes, archaeological sites and natural reserves), sites, monuments and different artefacts
4. Current legal framework for heritage preservation in Portugal
Theoretical and practical sessions: Lectures and open discussion classes. Tutorials: Tutorials will be devoted to the critical analysis of texts and pieces of legislation. Laboratory sessions: Practical exercises.
