Objectives

Historical representation of the history of German Literature in the Middle Ages from 1300 until the 17th century

Learning outcomes and competences

Capacity to be able to recognise the European context of German literature until 1700.

After an exemplary description of works, genres and forms, the following aspects will be the subject of analysis: a) Understanding literary history not only as a chronology of texts, but also as the history of transmitted texts which were composed in specific literary-historical contexts and with certain intentions, but which lived in different variants an d which were understood from changing perspectives. b) Identification of the poetical and rhetorical bases of medieval literature, the historical / cultural preconditions and possibilities of the different media. c) Perception of literature's different functions in respective social and cultural contexts. d) Acknowledgement of the productive transfer mechanisms between different co-existing literatures within the pre-national context. e) Questioning the validity of the traditional designations of periods and epochs.
