- To understand the evolution of archives and libraries as information systems and the development of the disciplines that were in the origin of Information Science
- To characterize the different types of archives and libraries
- To acquire competencies in order to apply correctly the Quadripolar Method of research to archives and libraries’ systems, specially in what concerns the technical procedures and the presentation of research results.
At the end of the semester, the student must be able:
- to characterize the general lines of archives and libraries systems' evolution
- to explain the factors that were in the origin of Information Science as a scientific discipline
- to identify the technical operations related to the diferent phases of the work in archives and libraries
- to accomplish an organic-functional study of an entity that produces information and to present it in a report form
- to use informational flow evaluation models
Although it is not indispensable the historical knowledge about the social, economic, political and cultural evolution, in global terms and particularly in Portugal, it is important that the students may have clear notions of such evolution to better understand the raising and development of archives and libraries in a diachronic perspective. The subjects of the curricular unit "History of Culture" are a fondamental basis to this knowledge.
It is also important to know how the institutions that produce information evolve along the time, in particular those of central and municipal administration, the private ones such as eclesiastic, and others.

3. Typology of library information systems
III. The application of quadripolar method of research to archives and libraries information systems – general approach
1. The technical pole’s operations (in particular organic-functional analysis and evaluation)
2. The morphological pole operations (presentation of research results)
Explanation of the subjects in the teoretical-practical classes, supported by slides and powerpoint presentations.
Discussion of the programme topics with students, based on guidelines available in SIGARRA and aditional readings.
Practical exercises relative to III point of the syllabus.

Delivering of two small individual assessments (A1 and A2) about themes of the programme, based mainly in readings synthesis – each one of the assessments will count 15% for the final classification. The assessments shall be delivered at the beginning of November and at the beginning of December (the deadline will be established when the classes start)
Final examination (FE) – without consultation and the duration of two hours – 70%
The final classification (FC) will be calculated as follows:
FC = A1x0,15 + A2x0,15 + FEx0,7

The worker students are not dismissed of presenting all the assessments.
The improvement of final classification can be obtained by repeating the final examination.
It is not possible to reformulate the written works is order to improve the final classification.
