Objectives

By the end of the 1st semester of the Master course, students should have reached the level C1.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR) in all skills (oral comprehension, reading, conversation and writing). Therefore, by the end of the semester, students should be able:
1. to express themselves in different professional and academic situations, orally and in written text, and to choose the appropriate register, according to the situation or the context;
2. to recognize different text types and to produce them actively;
3. to express themselves with improved grammatical correctness and lexical differentiation according to the specific situation;
4. to understand extracts of specialized texts in German language and to reproduce/summarize the contents;
5. to express themselves orally in different communicative situations, with expanded knowledge in vocabulary and increased fluency;
6. to retrieve and process information from different sources in German language, in order to produce and present written work for academic purposes;
7. to use appropriately available media such as dictionaries, grammar manuals, corpora, correction programs etc.;
8. to use appropriate learning strategies and to overcome existing problems.

Program

Reading skills: Reading and analysis of scientific, journalistic and literary texts (emphasis on report, explanation, exposition);
Awareness raising for specific language features according to different text types (in structure, style, register, idiomatic phrases), function of verbal tenses and moods by analysing authentic texts.
Oral understanding/listening: speeches, seminar papers, discussions and authentic audio-texts from TV, radio, internet.
Interaction: acquirement and training of the necessary skills to express orally opinions and ideas in a precise way and to respond to oral contributions of fellow students.
Oral and written text production: training of appropriate language features do expose and connect different issues, taking into account text coherence and cohesion (emphasis on conjunctions and discourse connectives);
Text composition taking into account the features of different text types (abstract, summary, business letter, curriculum vitae, letter of application, exposition, seminar paper, amongst others).
Topics: actual cultural topics of German-speaking countries, comparison of cultural peculiarities, intercultural communication, professional education and academic studies, translation.
Improvement of language correctness by revisions and consolidation of chosen topics in grammar, idiomatic phrases, analysis of interferences with native or second language, contrastive analysis of language features, collocation (recourse to corpora), production of glossaries using specific dictionaries, learning strategies.
Participation in projects and preparation of seminar papers.
Methods: autonomous research, individual and group projects, presentation of work results, active participation in class in order to practice communicative skills.
