Objectives

Aims and Skills:
- Knowledge about the course main theoretical and methodoligical issues,emphasinsing the new forms of organization od the space and the territory. Consequently, it will be discussed the operationalization of traditional typologies in the context of contemporary societies and the reconsiderations in need;
- Sensibilization towards the importance of territory interdisciplanary perspective. In that sense it will be given special attention to other scientific fields like geography and anthropology;
- It will be given a particular attention to the hstorical notion of the urban reality in the global imaginary.That dimension implies to analize the urban and so cial change in connection with phenomena of geographical and social mobility what is related to migrations, ethnicity , culture, life stlyle and citizenship;
- Knowledge about the new traits, representations and appropriations of the social rural space;
- Iniciation to oprational skills in order to elaborate research projects related to the professional formation and sociological action in institutions responsible for plannin and management of space and terriorry.

Learning Outcomes:
- Deepening of theories and problematics concerned with specific issues of territory sociological contemporary analysis;
- Development of a critical and reflexive attitude in terms of space and territory;
- Comphreension of the new social and cultural features of contemporary cities.
- Capacity of integrating knowledges, deal with complex situations and adoption of a interdisciplinary aproach in the concrete research of metropolitan, urban and rural areas.

1. The emergence of the problematic of the space: social and historical factors.
2. Analytical dimensions of territory and interdisciplinarity.
3. The sociological approach of territory.
4. Main trends in the transformation of territory: the limits of the dicotomy rural versus urban and the operationalization of the concept of urbanization.
5. Social structures and spatial structures: practices,representations and appropriations of the spaces.
6. Local Identities and cosmopolitan spaces: From the new ruralities to the ethnoscapes.

Eligibility for exams

. Thematical written report
. Presence at the lectures and work developed at tutorial sessions.
. All the evaluation components are compulsory.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation consists in a final exam about all the subjects presented during the course. The exame has a ponderation of 50% in the final average grade.
The evaluatrion will be complemented with a thematical report in connection with the course program. That report has 35% of ponderation in the final grade.
It will be also taken in account the students presence at the sessions as well as their paticipation at tutorial sessions what will have a wieght of 15%.

In order to get the final approval in the course it is necessary to get at least 10/20 both in the final exam and thematic report

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The students who, according to the law are not abe to attend the classes must get in touch with the teacher at the begining of the year. Those studentswill be evaluated by an exame and a thematical report. Each of these components has 50% weight. The exam dates as well as the reports presentation will be the same applied to all the other students.

Classification improvement

The student can apply for the improvement of the final grade. The improvement may happen in the normal period or in the evaluation period of the year after and in both evaluation components and it is necessary to obtain at least 10/20 in each component.
Students must pay attention to the changes in the course program and respective evaluation rules.

Observations

The time of appeal includes the completion of a written examination and, if necessary, oral and a written report theme. Each component has a weight of 50%. Is required the realization of the evaluation element for which was obtained a negative grade. The approval of the course has a condition that the scores obtained in each of the components is equal to or higher than 10.

Foreigner students unable to write in Portuguese are allowed to write their exam and report in English, French or Spanish.

At the beginning of the academic year will be given a schedule of attendance to the students. All scanned documents relevant to the discipline will be inserted in SIGARRA
