Objectives
Objectives
- Analysis of contemporary social realities at local, national and global environmental issues in the context of a globalized world;
- Analysis of recent theoretical and empirical developments in the fields of development and sustainability, with particular focus on the problems of local governments, development models and social movements;
- Analysis of social movements and perception of environmental associations in the context of globalization;
- Analysis of the relationship between social and natural systems in the context of the increasing social risks;
- Analysis of political, economic, social, legal and symbolic related with this problems;
- Analysis of environmental issues in terms of representations, values and individual attitudes.
Program
1. Brief conceptual framework: defining concepts of the theoretical problem.
2. Environment, Nature and Society: the society and the political power regarding the emerging problems.
3. New social risks and new social representations. Trends and analytical axes today.
4. The role of territory and its socio-environmental characteristics: the Portuguese case.
5. Environment, social change and environmental policies: endogeneity (s) and sustainable development. Energy, population, development, international institutions.
6. Citizenship, social movements and environmental associations.
7. Representations, values and attitudes towards the environment: the Portuguese case in a comparative perspective.

Eligibility for exams
- Written critical appreciation of a literary work or thematic written report: 35%
- Exam: 40%
- Presence in the theoretical-practical sessions as well as in the tutorial guidance:10%
- Work done in the tutorial guidance sessions: 15%
The evaluation shall consist of the final exam, dealing with the matter overall worked throughout the semester (study materials and classes). The evaluation will also be combined with the realization of a written work. It will also include consideration of the attendance and work sessions of tutorials orientation. It is mandatory to carry out all elements of assessment.
Calculation formula of final grade
- Written critical appreciation of a literary work or thematic written report: 35%
- Exam: 40%

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
Students who, according to the Guidelines of FLUP, are not covered by the normal attendance component, are required to contact the teacher at the beginning of the period of operation of the discipline, for the establishment of related evaluation of knowledge.
Classification improvement
Final exam (40%) and written critical appreciation of a literary work or thematic written group report (60%).
The student may require improvement of the classification according to the Guidelines of FLUP. The improvement always includes a new final exam (40% of the final grade) and a new recension (60% of the final grade).
The approval of the course has a condition that the classification obtained in the final written exam, and oral if necessary, is equal to or higher than 10 and the written work is not less than 8 points. Failure to comply with this condition involves a new inscription in the time of appeal.
Observations
At the time of appeal it's obliged to carry out a final examination (40% of the final grade) and a recension (60% of the final grade). The approval of the course has a condition that the classification obtained in the final written exam, and oral if necessary, is equal to or higher than 10 and the written work is not less than 8 points.
